For the Outer Covering:
- 1 Cup rice flour
- 1 Cup water
- A pinch of salt
- 1 Tsp ghee (clarified butter)
For the Sweet Filling:
- 1 Cup grated coconut
- 1/2 Cup jaggery, grated
- 1/2 Tsp cardamom powder
- 1 Tsp ghee
- A Handful of chopped nuts (cashews and almonds)
Preparing the Sweet Filling:
- Heat ghee in a Pan and add the grated coconut. Sauté it for a few minutes until it turns slightly golden.
- Add the grated jaggery and continue to cook on low heat. Stir continuously until the jaggery melts and blends with the coconut.
- Add the cardamom powder and chopped nuts, and mix well.
- Cook the mixture until it thickens and leaves the sides of the Pan. Remove it from the heat and let it cool.
Making the Outer Covering:
- Boil water in a Saucepan and add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of ghee.
- Reduce the heat and add the rice flour. Stir vigorously to avoid lumps until it forms a dough-like consistency.
- Turn off the heat, cover the Pan, and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Knead the dough when it's still warm to make it smooth and pliable. If it feels too dry, add a little warm water.
Shaping the Modak:
- Take a small portion of the rice flour dough and roll it into a smooth ball.
- Flatten the ball into a small disc using your fingers or the palm of your hand.
- Place a spoonful of the sweet filling in the center of the disc.
- Carefully bring the edges of the disc together, pinching them at the top to form a Modak shape.
- Repeat this process for the remaining dough and filling.
Steaming the Modak:
- Grease a steamer plate or tray with a little ghee to prevent sticking.
- Arrange the Modaks on the plate, leaving some space between them.
- Steam the Modaks for about 10-12 minutes until they become slightly translucent and shiny.
Offering to Lord Ganesha:
- Allow the Modaks to cool for a few minutes before removing them from the steamer.
- Offer the Modaks to Lord Ganesha with devotion and love.
